Worm Farmer Ana Maria
Our Worm Farm Story
Laica Worms & Vermicast was created by Ana Maria Quintero, ten years ago. Ana Maria attended the University of South Florida, St Petersburg (USFSP) and graduated with a degree in Geography with a concentration in Conservation of Society and the Environment, and a Minor in Environmental Policy. While she attended USFSP she was a board member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Theta Kappa, The Student Environmental Awareness Society (SEAS), and the Garden Club. While Ana Maria was vice president of the Garden Club she took care of the worm farm at the garden and realized the impact Red Wigglers can make in food waste management was so immense, that she decided to pursue a career in worm farming!
Ana Maria was also part of the Honors Program at USFSP where she published a thesis titled “The Politics of Organic Food Consumption, Recycling, and Solar Power Use.” For this thesis Ana Maria did extensive background research on food waste and it was at that point when she realized that food waste management should receive attention and remediation. A shorter version of the USFSP Honors Thesis was published by the Florida Geographer Journal by the Title: “Politics, The Environment and USF St. Peterburg Students.”
The volunteering work with organizations on campus in combination with the research Ana Maria did for the Honors Thesis, motivated her to make official the creation of Laica Worms and Vermicast LLC in 2016.
